Its applications are open source, its no-logs infrastructure has undergone recurring public audits, and its 2026 update describes a fifth consecutive annual examination by Securitum. The provider also operates from Switzerland and publishes information about legal requests and its inability to identify VPN activity from retained logs.
The VPN service can protect supported traffic between a user's device and a Proton VPN server. It includes consumer controls such as protocol selection, kill-switch behavior, DNS protection, NetShield, and Secure Core on eligible plans. The free tier provides a practical entry point for personal privacy, although it does not include every paid location or feature.
Bright Data is built around controlled data access
Bright Data provides residential, ISP, mobile, and datacenter proxy networks alongside managed collection and unblocking products. Its residential documentation describes geographic targeting, automatic rotation, stable sessions when required, and controls for customers who need specific access levels.
This is valuable for approved market research, localization testing, ad verification, brand protection, and collection of public information at organizational scale. It is not a personal VPN interface. Setup and procurement can involve zones, credentials, endpoints, KYC, use-case review, and technical integration.
Transparency means different evidence
For Proton VPN, a buyer should examine what the service logs, how its apps behave, the audit scope, account information, jurisdiction, and legal-request history. For Bright Data, a buyer should examine how IPs enter the network, how participants consent, which customers and use cases are verified, what destinations are restricted, and how collected data is handled.
Bright Data states that its residential network uses an explicit opt-in model and documents customer verification and access policies. Those statements are relevant to responsible sourcing, but a customer still remains responsible for the legality, necessity, proportionality, and terms compliance of the intended workflow.
Encryption and traffic scope
Proton VPN is the stronger privacy boundary for everyday device traffic. It is designed to route supported traffic through a VPN protocol instead of requiring every app to be configured with a separate endpoint. Bright Data routes the requests sent through its configured proxy or data product. It does not automatically protect unrelated applications on the same device.
HTTPS remains essential when using a proxy because it protects the connection to an HTTPS destination. A proxy can be part of a secure architecture, but it should not be described as equivalent to a device-wide VPN tunnel.
Open-source apps versus APIs and managed tools

Proton VPN has free and paid consumer plans. Value depends on privacy features, locations, performance, and whether the wider Proton ecosystem matters. Bright Data pricing can depend on proxy type, bandwidth, records, requests, managed product, and contract terms.
For a company, the cheapest unit price may not be the cheapest completed workflow. Failure rate, engineering time, compliance review, and support can be material. For an individual, those enterprise considerations are unnecessary, and a VPN subscription or free tier is much easier to evaluate.
Final choice
Choose Proton VPN when the task is personal privacy, public Wi-Fi, travel, normal browsing, or an audited open-source VPN. Choose Bright Data when an authorized business workflow requires targeted proxy traffic, rotation, stable sessions, APIs, or managed data tools. Some organizations may use a VPN for employee connections and a proxy platform for a separate data system, but the products should remain separate in policy and architecture.
